Rep. Robby Robbins (R – Dorchester, Colleton) has been appointed to an ad hoc committee to review and make recommendations pertaining to premises/alcohol liability requirements. Rep. Jason Elliott will chair the ad hoc committee.

In the appointment letter, House Judiciary Chair Weston Newton said he made the appointment in consultation with House Speaker Murrell Smith and his office.

Robbins, who serves on the House Judiciary Committee, welcomed the appointment:

“I appreciate the  confidence placed in me by Speaker Smith and Chairman Newton. I look forward to finding solutions to these very important issues facing our small businesses and citizens.”

The ad hoc committee was formed in response to rising liquor liability insurance premiums, the drop in available insurance carriers, and ultimately, a rise in businesses closings due to the high insurance rates. Additionally, Newton asked that the committee in their appointment letter to be “mindful that solutions must be nuanced and balance competing factors, such as a victim’s right to be made whole after a tragedy.”
