Project Description

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) proposes improvements to the SC 61 corridor in Colleton County. The SC 61 Safety Improvements project in Colleton County is part of the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) Rural Road Safety Program (RRSP). The SCDOT initiated the program in 2017 to improve safety on the worst-performing, rural roadways through engineering solutions identified to reduce the frequency of fatal and serious injury accidents.

The project will include edgeline and centerline rumble strips, improved pavement markings, improved signs, paved shoulders, widened earth shoulders, flattening ditch backslopes, guardrail, beveling of roadside pipe ends and clear zone improvements to reduce the frequency of fatal and serious injury run-off-the-road crashes. The project study area extends from a half mile west of Arrowhead Lane (L-1192) to the Colleton/Dorchester county line.
